Illumination Optics

The aim of a Illumination design is to direct, redistribute or homogenize light from a light source in a defined way.

Lightguide Design

Various optical components are available for this task, which can be combined as required to find an optimum solution:

  • Light guides that utilize total internal reflection. These can be used as volume light guides, hollow light guides or light guides consisting of various components.
  • Reflectors for directing the light. These can utilize total internal reflection or work as coated mirrors. Reflectors can have flat, spherical or free-form surfaces.
  • Collimators that effectively collect light from extended light sources, such as TIR collimators, which direct light through a combination of reflection and refraction.
  • Fresnel structures and other microstructures are used on arbitrary surface shapes to locally guide or decouple light.

Illumination design is used in a wide range of application areas, such as:

 

  • In technical lighting, for example, luminaires are developed in the automotive sector,
  • for room lighting or for staging architecture.
  • Illuminated displays are used as means of communication to indicate the status of tools or devices, warning lights with prescribed brightness distribution or homogeneous displays.
  • Defined and constant light distributions are required in optical measurement technology or sensor technology.

When carrying out our work, we rely on teamwork and close cooperation with our customers. For our simulations, we use both proven commercial development tools and our own special software.
